PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Dr. Alvaro Berger is a general and vascular surgeon, and a pioneer in Guatemala using advanced technology to treat diseases of the veins and arteries. As medical director of the VASCUMED Vein Clinic for over 30 years, he has been treating routine and complex vein diseases for patients who require either cosmetic procedures or serious life-saving surgery quickly, safely, and economically.

When patients experience night cramps or pain or swelling in their legs, Dr. Berger might perform a Doppler ultrasound, which measures the movement of fluids by reflecting sound waves to record the speed and flow of blood in the veins. Venous insufficiency happens when the blood does not flow in the correct direction with the correct pressure and could be a serious problem if not treated by a qualified vein specialist.

For varicose veins, venous insufficiency, ulcers, thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, carotid disease, peripheral arteriosclerosis, or aneurysms, Dr. Berger could use conventional procedures, or state of the art endovascular technology, or a combination of both. Problem veins could also be treated by phlebectomy, removing the veins through small incisions in the skin. Smaller spider veins are normally treated most effectively with laser technology, or sclerotherapy micro foam and liquid chemical ablation.

Dr. Berger explains how he uses EVLT radiofrequency therapy to seal the vein with the VNUS closure method. “For elimination of saphenous vein reflux to remove varicose veins, the optical fiber is inserted, then the laser then causes the vein to collapse, thus eliminating the unsightly blue lines and leaving the surface skin smooth and healthy. Moreover, it is far less invasive than surgery, so we use local anesthesia, and it has lower complication rates.”

Cosmetic procedures to remove unsightly veins in the back of the hands are called phlebectomy, done in Dr. Berger’s clinic with local anesthesia. Patients see immediate results with no pain or side effects and leave within hours with hands that look smoother and younger.

With a devotion to excellence in vascular surgery, phlebology, angiology and lymphology, Dr. Berger regularly participates in international conferences in North America, Europe, and Latin America, to offer his patients the most advanced treatment methods in this fascinating field.

Throughout the Guatemala medical community, Dr. Berger is highly respected for his skills, ethics, and professionalism. Patients have come to appreciate his honest evaluation and attention to their successful outcome to improve their circulation, mobility, and quality of life.

REVIEWS FROM PATIENTS

I had  terrible pain in my legs for 25 years. I was always misdiagnosed over and over as having leg ulcers. I finally went to Vascumed for another opinion with Dr. Berger. After his accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan, I was cured in 3 weeks. I was amazed that after so much time I could finally find a solution and my pain stopped.
