PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Casa Muriel is an independent and assisted living residence for seniors in Antigua Guatemala. We offer all the services of a comfortable private home, plus fresh-cooked meals, personal caregivers, and activities to rejuvenate the mind, body, and spirit. Our goal is for every resident of Casa Muriel to say, “What a relief! I don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

In recent years, the generation of people over 70 are expecting more, and doing more in regard to improving their quality of life for the next 20+ years. As a communal residence, Casa Muriel focuses on all the positive aspects of aging by maintaining physical and intellectual activity, cultivating a serene outlook, and celebrating good humor among friends.

In the third age of life, or tercera edad, our personal energy is consolidating, readjusting, and coming alive. All the aspects of our identities that have been overshadowed by jobs, school, marriage, family, health issues, culture and obligations realign to ignite the next stage of inner journeys. Dormant forces awaken and the art of “letting go” seems more comforting than ever.

Living alone does not always equate to being independent; it could just mean that you have to work harder to initiate personal interactions. Our goal is to normalize the entire lifespan with community-wide social events, instead of separating and alienating the older third to fit into pre-conceived attitudes of the last century.

At Casa Muriel, we dispel the image of institutions and envision a viable and enriching community-based alternative for seniors. Throughout our Antigua ex-pat group, children have the International and Green Schools, business owners depend on our patronage for decades, and families expand and prosper. Yet, the older folks are out there on their own, maybe isolated and unsure, when a well-managed social and residential facility can get them back in the swing of things, the way they used to be.

Our home is a safe haven for older folks with shared values of curiosity, humor, charity and responsibility. With a lifetime of experience, we understand that societies thrive and prosper when every member applies individual strengths to cooperate as a cohesive group. We believe that having a solid sense of community and participating in social events, in addition to having a helping hand from our staff, will give our residents the independence they want, and the confidence to expand horizons to their greatest potential. Changes are inevitable, but we can manage them together with our trusted professional advisors, economically and effectively.

This is the pinnacle of human development, not the decline that we’re told it is. Taking the best advantage of our precious lives means living slower, deeper, and more connected. Growing older is a blessing, and not so scary after all.

PROFESSIONAL & ACADEMIC

The Casa Muriel Retirement Home concept was created by Lori Shea, a natural step forward after 14 years of providing high-quality affordable medical care for foreigners in Guatemala through Guatemala Medical Travel. We opened the first location, a five-bedroom home in Antigua, in the Spring of 2021 at the close of the Covid pandemic.

Previously, Lori had a long career in the hospitality industry: in management, accounting, concept development, sales, marketing, recruiting, training, and operations. Initially, I attended El Conservatorio de la Música del Estado de Puebla (México). Then, after studies in Business Administration in Washington, DC, I moved to Miami & Key West in the late 1980’s, and continued courses at Florida International University. In the 2000’s I closed my consulting company in Miami Beach to go sailing again, arriving in Rio Dulce, Guatemala in 2006.
